Here\u2019s what you need to know about buying, possessing, transporting, and using recreational marijuana under Colorado law. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possession and Use in Colorado<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Age: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must be 21 or older to possess or use marijuana. <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maximum amount:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can possess up to one ounce (1 oz.) of marijuana flower, concentrates, or edibles.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Where you can use marijuana:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can\u2019t legally use marijuana in public. If you\u2019re in an apartment, you should check with your landlord. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Where you DEFINITELY can\u2019t use marijuana:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana is prohibited in all of the national parks, forests, and other federally protected areas in Colorado. Even though it\u2019s legal under state law, getting caught with marijuana in these areas can result in hefty fines and even imprisonment. And though this is probably obvious, you can\u2019t use marijuana in &#8212; or transport to &#8211; neighboring states. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Marijuana-friendly places<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe your landlord isn\u2019t ok with marijuana, or you\u2019re just visiting the state. Whatever the reason, if you don\u2019t have a private residence where you can use marijuana in Colorado, you still have options. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are plenty of private venues across the state that allow visitors to smoke, like special \u201clounges\u201d that typically charge a membership fee or a daily rate for cannabis consumers. Occasionally, other venues will host pot-friendly events for the general public, usually with an additional ticket cost. And don\u2019t forget the many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopotguide.com\/marijuana-friendly-hotels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hotels, lodges, and condos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across Colorado that allow guests to use marijuana. Wherever you are, make sure to read up on your host\u2019s policies and be courteous to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What about growing my own marijuana?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though you can only travel with one ounce of marijuana or less, adults 21 and older are allowed to grow up to three immature plants and three mature plants. In this context, \u201cmature\u201d plants are those that can be harvested for usable marijuana (this stage is also known as \u201cflowering\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can keep all the marijuana these plants produce, even if it\u2019s more than an ounce. If you do produce more than an ounce of marijuana with your own plants, however, it has to stay where you grew it. Let\u2019s break it down to make sure you understand what could get you in trouble if you\u2019re driving and you\u2019re pulled over with marijuana in Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to colorado.gov,<\/span><b> you can be charged with a traffic offense if the marijuana product seal is broken, some of the product has been consumed<\/b><b>,<\/b><b> and there\u2019s evidence that it was used in the car.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Considering that this evidence is up to an officer\u2019s discretion, the easiest way to ensure you don\u2019t get a ticket for an open container of marijuana is to store it somewhere passengers won\u2019t have access &#8212; like in the trunk. Otherwise, if the container of marijuana is still sealed, you shouldn\u2019t have any problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can I get fired for using marijuana?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though marijuana is legal for adults in Colorado, your employer can still impose restrictions on drug use &#8212; even outside the workplace. Traces of marijuana can stay in your system for days or weeks, depending on how much you use and how often you use it. If your employer requires regular drug tests, that\u2019s something to keep in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Buying Marijuana in Colorado<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You may not find it at the corner store, but licensed marijuana dispensaries have sprung up all around the state &#8212; especially in big metropolitan areas like Denver and Aurora. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where can I buy marijuana in Colorado?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopotguide.com\/where-to-buy-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find a dispensary near you. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Store Hours<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under Colorado marijuana laws, marijuana stores can operate from <\/span><b>8 A.M. until midnight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, though it\u2019s best to check with your local store as some cities (like Denver) require stores to close earlier than midnight. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How much can I buy?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recreational marijuana users can\u2019t carry around more than one ounce (28 grams) of cannabis at a time. Whether you have flower, hash, edibles, or other concentrates, you\u2019re allowed to possess one ounce of retail marijuana products. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopotguide.com\/colorado-marijuana-blog\/article\/marijuana-prices-in-denver-and-colorado-spring-2017-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) That\u2019s down nearly $2.04 per gram from the same period in 2014. But that\u2019s only the average price for all strains of marijuana. You could expect to pay as much as $20 per gram or more for premium weed strains. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember: There are 28 grams in an ounce, so buying the maximum legal amount of marijuana could be quite expensive, especially considering these are pre-tax prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana Taxes <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several different taxes are applied to marijuana purchases in Colorado, including state and local taxes. Local taxes can vary from city to city. Denver, for example, charges a 7.15% tax rate for all recreational marijuana sales while Aurora charges 7.75%. One analysis found that commercial sales of marijuana have generated over $500 million in Colorado tax revenue since the start of 2014. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/colorado\/articles\/2017-07-20\/colorado-pot-tax-revenue-surpasses-500-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where does all that tax revenue go? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than half of marijuana tax revenue funds K-12 education, including school construction, renovations, and bullying prevention programs. A significant portion (nearly a quarter by some estimates) goes to substance abuse programs and youth drug prevention efforts. A smaller percentage goes to law enforcement, such as the Marijuana Enforcement Division and the Attorney General\u2019s special prosecutions unit. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Medical Marijuana<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Medical marijuana was introduced in Colorado in 2001. It became the 7th U.S. state to legalize marijuana use for patients suffering from a range of conditions with a qualifying doctor\u2019s recommendation. That certification must state that you have a qualifying condition and that you would benefit from medical marijuana.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Applying for a medical marijuana card<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The process to apply for a medical marijuana card in Colorado is fairly simple and can be completed online (once you have written approval from a doctor). There\u2019s a $15 processing fee for all applications. It was all handled under the same business umbrella. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, marijuana producers don\u2019t necessarily have to sell marijuana, and store owners don\u2019t have to grow it themselves. There are even marijuana businesses that don\u2019t sell or grow the stuff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s a full list of the marijuana business licenses you can apply for in Colorado, according to colorado.gov:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Marijuana Store<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: A business where adults 21 or older may purchase retail marijuana <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Marijuana Cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: A facility that grows and harvests marijuana plants for retail stores<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Product Manufacturing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: A facility that manufactures retail marijuana products (like edibles and concentrates) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Testing Facility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: A facility that performs testing and research on marijuana for other licensed retail businesses <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Transporter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Provides transportation and temporary storage services to marijuana businesses <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Retail Marijuana Operator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Provides professional operational services to one or more retail marijuana businesses <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selling marijuana products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you have your store opened and you\u2019re ready to sell, make sure you\u2019re familiar with the laws about purchasing marijuana in Colorado. If you sell over the legal limit to a buyer or sell to a minor, you\u2019re liable for penalties under the law (See \u201cPenalties\u201d under \u201cUsing Marijuana in Colorado\u201d below). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can find the maximum purchase limit for marijuana products above, but here they are again in case you missed them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A retail marijuana store can sell each legal buyer: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 ounce (28 grams) of marijuana flower, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8 grams of concentrate (wax, hash, THC oil, or tinctures), <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">800 milligrams of THC in edibles (typically about 80 servings), or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some mixture of the above<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as long as the total THC content doesn\u2019t exceed the equivalent of one ounce. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s an example. Say you sold a buyer 4 grams of concentrate. After that, you could only sell them 14 grams of marijuana flower since the total THC equivalent of that transaction would be one ounce. Or, if you sold a customer 200 milligrams of THC edibles, you could also sell them 14 grams of marijuana and 2 grams of concentrates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you can probably tell, you\u2019ll need to understand math to abide by these purchasing rules. Make sure you and your employees can handle these calculations, or you risk running afoul of the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Using Marijuana in Colorado<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now that you know about Colorado marijuana laws, it\u2019s time to cover what it\u2019s actually like to use the stuff! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this section, we\u2019ll cover methods of consuming marijuana, how to use it safely, its potential health effects, and what penalties you could incur for breaking the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Methods of consumption<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re new to using marijuana, you might not realize that there are a number of different ways to consume it, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smoking<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cclassic\u201d method of consuming marijuana, and certainly the most common, is smoking. Marijuana is smoked with a lighter held to the plant material. There are a few ways you can smoke marijuana, including\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Blunts\/joints: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weed is rolled into a cigar or cigarette-like wrap and smoked.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pipes<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weed is loaded into \u201cbowl\u201d at the end of a dry pipe. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Water pipes\/bongs<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana smoke is filtered through a chamber of water before reaching the mouthpiece.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smoking marijuana doesn\u2019t require expensive equipment like some other methods (though you can definitely spend a lot on high-end pipes and bongs). But there are some drawbacks. For one, the smoke produced by burning marijuana can be harsh on the lungs. Depending on how you\u2019re smoking it and how often, this smoke can have lasting effects on the respiratory system (more on that under \u201cHealth Effects\u201d below). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another thing to keep in mind is that the high from smoking marijuana is different than a vaping high. That\u2019s because the psychoactive THC released from combusting (burning) marijuana is different than what vaping releases. Many users report that smoking marijuana tends to give a longer-lasting, more \u201cstoned\u201d high as compared to the more mellowed-out feeling from vaporized cannabis. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vaping<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana vaporizers use electronic heating systems that get weed just hot enough to release the THC inside without combusting (burning) it. Taking a pull of vapor feels much smoother than taking a hit of smoke, and the vapor tends to have a softer and subtler flavor. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vaping marijuana has become quite popular in Colorado. So why are more people turning to vaporizers rather than pipes? Perhaps one of the reasons is the smell &#8212; or lack thereof. Unlike smoking marijuana, vaporizing tends to leave little residual odor. If you\u2019re worried about your neighbors complaining about the smell of marijuana, don\u2019t want your clothes to smell like weed, or are in a situation where you need to be discrete, a vaporizer is the way to go. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A downside to vaping is that it can be expensive with a higher barrier to entry. There\u2019s no such thing as a \u201cdisposable\u201d marijuana vaporizer, unlike smoking blunts or joints. A small, portable vaporizer could go for about $50 to $60. Many of these products are called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthyhempoil.com\/best-vape-pen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vape pens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. On the high end, there are stationary \u201cdesktop\u201d vapes, which produce a ton of vapor and could run you as much as $700. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dabbing\/hash oil\/concentrates<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dabbing involves heating up concentrated doses of marijuana on a small surface, usually a nail, and inhaling the smoke that\u2019s produced. This concentrated cannabis goes by several names, such as wax, shatter, and butane hash oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If smoking and vaping marijuana are like drinking a beer, \u201cdabbing\u201d a marijuana concentrate is like taking a shot of vodka. The high from this method tends to hit quickly and comes on strong. That\u2019s because the THC extract is incredibly concentrated. Hash oils, wax, and other concentrates can contain 60-80% THC. Compare that to marijuana flower, which tends only to have<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 15-25% THC, and you can see why this method is so potent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, a higher-potency product also comes at a higher cost. There\u2019s also the fact that dabbing typically requires a blowtorch to heat the concentrate to the desired temperature, which can be dangerous if used incorrectly. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Edibles<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the most popular methods with new cannabis consumers, edibles let you experience all the effects of being high without having to inhale smoke or vapor. Edibles can come in a variety of forms, including candies, sodas, and baked goods (like the stereotypical brownies). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though a lot of work has gone into making edibles safe for adults to consume, it\u2019s important to understand what constitutes a \u201cserving size\u201d and how long they can take to kick in.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 14.4px\">Serving size: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The recommended amount for edibles is <\/span><b style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 14.4px\">10 milligrams of THC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. That might be just one piece of a candy bar or a few sips of soda. Make sure you read the packaging label and understand how much you\u2019re consuming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Duration: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It could be a while before you start feeling the effects of edibles, depending on how full your stomach is, your metabolism, and other factors. You should wait several hours after consuming it before having any more. Some edibles can last up to 10 hours, so make sure you clear your calendar before you partake!<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have children or pets, be sure to store edibles somewhere they can\u2019t get to them. The smell and flavor of edibles can be attractive, but consuming these products can be dangerous for young children and small animals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> remember never to drive or operate heavy machinery after consuming edibles. Though you might not \u201cfeel high\u201d when you start driving, it\u2019s impossible to know when an edible high will kick in and render you intoxicated. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Topicals<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lotions, salves, sprays, patches, and balms can be infused with cannabis to help treat skin inflammation, pain, itchiness, soreness, and other conditions. These products work by activating certain receptors in the skin with cannabinoids derived from marijuana, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthyhempoil.com\/product-tag\/cbd-topicals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBD topicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Though they won\u2019t get you high, topicals may bring relief to painful skin areas and possibly help with cramping and muscle soreness. As a reminder, our products are not intended to diagnose or treat any medical ailments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Safe Usage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s very unlikely to have a lethal overdose on marijuana. But that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get sick or seriously injured or die in an accident related to marijuana consumption. Here\u2019s what you should know about using marijuana safely. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Storage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana, edibles, and other cannabis products should be kept in airtight containers out of reach of children or pets. The law requires that marijuana products are sold in child-resistant containers. But it\u2019s up to you to keep marijuana away from those who shouldn\u2019t have it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To make your weed last the longest, you should store it in a cool, dry place with low or no exposure to outside air. Glass jars are great for this purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accidental Ingestion and Edibles<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana itself won\u2019t make you high if you consume it in plant form. You won\u2019t experience any adverse symptoms, other than maybe some indigestion. \u00a0But if you remove edibles from their original packaging, which has a prominent symbol warning that the product contains THC, you could accidentally consume a big dose of THC without even realizing it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you or a loved one has accidentally ingested a marijuana product, the first thing you should do is check on their symptoms. These symptoms can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trouble with breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Light-headedness or dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loss of coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Panic attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rapid heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re noticing these symptoms in an adult, the best thing to do right away is to try and calm down the affected person, reminding them that what they\u2019re experiencing is temporary and can likely be helped by taking deep, slow breaths. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With children, however, it\u2019s a different story. When toddlers or young kids ingest edibles, these symptoms can become serious. If your child has consumed a marijuana product, don\u2019t be afraid to seek medical attention for their well-being. Likewise, you should call 911 if an adult is having trouble breathing, has pale skin, or is unresponsive. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mixing marijuana, and marijuana with alcohol or other medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Different marijuana strains and products can have vastly different effects on the body and mind. \u00a0It\u2019s best to avoid mixing them until you\u2019re fully aware of how they affect you and how much you can handle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mixing marijuana and alcohol can make you severely impaired, often with feelings of nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana can also interact with prescription medications and other drugs with undesired effects. Make sure to look up whether marijuana can affect any medications you\u2019re taking and vice versa. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secondhand smoke<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like cigarettes, the secondhand smoke of marijuana can affect others in the vicinity, particularly in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. It\u2019s possible for bystanders to get a \u201ccontact high\u201d from being in the presence of marijuana smokers. More research is needed to determine the effects of this secondhand smoke. You shouldn\u2019t smoke around anyone who could suffer health consequences from inhaling it, like pregnant women, children, and those with respiratory issues. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Youth health effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana is legal only for adults over the age of 21 in Colorado, and you shouldn\u2019t give it to underage kids or adolescents. That\u2019s because marijuana can have significant effects on youth growth and development, including\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Addiction: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The parts of the brain that manage impulse control and decision-making are still under construction in our teenage years &#8212; and those functions can be permanently altered for heavy marijuana users. Those brain changes can make it easier for youth to get addicted to marijuana, and those who start using it as a teenager are more likely to continue using later in life. <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Athletic performance:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana smoke can worsen the condition of your lungs, making it harmful for youth athletes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Learning, memory, and potential:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marijuana affects short-term memory, attention span, learning, and decision-making abilities. These effects don\u2019t stop after the high wears off. As the brain is still developing until your early-to-mid 20s, marijuana can create permanent changes in brain structure and function in teens. That\u2019s particularly true for heavy users. One study on young heavy smokers showed a drop in brain functioning equivalent to losing 6 IQ points (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/109\/40\/E2657.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Penalties <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even though recreational marijuana is legal for adult use, you can still get in trouble with the law if you don\u2019t follow the rules (see Possession and Use in Colorado above). Here are some of the fines, penalties, and criminal charges related to marijuana in the state of Colorado. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possession<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adults 21 or over can legally possess one ounce of marijuana. Beyond that, you face penalties: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1 &#8211; 2 ounces of marijuana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: A petty offense with a $100 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>2 &#8211; 6 ounces: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A misdemeanor with up to a year in jail and up to a $700 fine<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>6 &#8211; 12 ounces:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A misdemeanor with up to 1.5 years in jail and a $500 to $5,000 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>More than 12 ounces:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A felony with up to 2 years in jail and a $1,000 to $100,000 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those with a valid medical marijuana card can possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana without penalty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Openly displaying or using 2 ounces of marijuana or less is a petty drug offense that can come with 24 hours of community service as well as a $100 fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paraphernalia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possession of marijuana paraphernalia is a petty offense with a $100 fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sale or Distribution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The only legal way to sell marijuana is through a licensed retail store. Otherwise, you face penalties:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>4 ounces or less: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A misdemeanor with up to 1.5 years in jail and a $500 to $5,000 fine<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>4 &#8211; 12 ounces:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A felony with up to 2 years in jail and a $1,000 to $100,000 fine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>12 ounces to 5 pounds:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A felony with up to 6 years in jail and a $2,000 to $500,000 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>5 pounds to 50 pounds:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A felony with up to 16 years in jail and a $3,000 to $750,000 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More than 50 pounds:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A felony with up to 32 years in jail and a $5,000 to $1,000,000 fine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possessing 8 ounces of marijuana or more is considered \u201cintent to distribute\u201d and will increase the sentence you face. <\/span><b>All of these penalties are more severe when selling to a minor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cultivation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adults 21 and older can grow up to 6 plants: 3 mature and 3 immature.
