The holidays are a time of joy and celebration with your nearest and dearest, but it can also be an incredibly stressful time of the year for some of us.

So, what can you do differently than years previous that will not only step up your mixology skills but can also knock the tension down by a few notches?

Top 3 CBD Holiday Drink Recipes

Whether you are CBD-curious or you are a CBD veteran, you will definitely want to try making your own edibles with these incredibly easy and delicious classic recipes with a new spin. Festive and fun, these recipe inspirations are going to be a big hit at your next holiday celebration.

Each CBD drink recipe is unique and straightforward to replicate. They are based on original recipes found on the web and modified to become CBD infused drink recipes. They are all non-alcoholic but full of flavor. Here are our picks for the top three CBD holiday drink recipes with our own Healthy Hemp Oil spin on it.

Candy Cane Julep

We found this sweet recipe by Tatanisha from awortheyread.com and it gave us all the holiday feels. The original creator made this drink because of their love for everything peppermint. With a swap for a few ingredients, this can quickly become a holiday favorite.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 oz. of Cranberry Ginger Ale (or Ginger Ale mixed with Cranberry juice)
  • A couple of drops of Tasty Hemp Oil: Spearmint Flavored CBD oil drops (available in 300 mg or 1000 mg of CBD per 1 oz.)
  • 1 oz. of simple syrup or Mint simple syrup (Coffee syrup dispensers)
  • 1 cup of crushed ice
  • Candy Cane for stir stick/garnish
  • A sprig of mint and fresh pine

Modification Note: You can use simple syrup because the minty flavor comes from the spearmint flavored CBD oil, but for extra mintiness, you can use peppermint or Mint simple syrup. Similarly, to retain the Candy Cane aspect of the Candy Cane julep, it’s best to use a red-colored drink like Cranberry Ginger Ale, but the CBD infused drink recipe is very versatile, and you can switch it up however you’d like.

Directions

  1. Add the syrup and CBD oil to the bottom of a glass.
  2. Add your crushed ice.
  3. Fill to the rim with the Ginger Ale.
  4. Add your candy cane stir stick to mix the syrup and CBD oils around.
  5. Garnish with a sprig of mint and fresh pine for the holiday upgrade.

Cranberry-Citrus Sparkler

What’s more synonymous with the holidays than recipes with cranberries in them? This next CBD drink recipe is all about that. It’s toast-worthy and pleasantly fancy—here’s our spin on the Cranberry Fizz Mocktail thanks to Thistlewoodfarms.com.

Ingredients

Modification Note: For something enjoyable, if you’ve got the time, instead of using the CBD tincture and cran-apple juice, you can try melting some of our CBDfx: CBD Gummies into some water and substituting that—simply add the gummies to a pan, add around 3 oz. of water to cover (and prevent sticking and burning), and heat to around 150 degrees Fahrenheit!

Directions

  1. Combine the sugar and ground cinnamon until they’re entirely blended, then put aside in a pile on a plate or cutting board.
  2. Rub a wedge of lemon or lime around the rim of your serving glass.
  3. Dip the rim of the glass into the sugar mix and wiggle it until the rim is fully covered.
  4. Fill the glass with ice.
  5. Add the Cran-Apple juice and the CBD tincture (or the melted-gummy substitute!).
  6. Add a splash of fresh lemon or lime juice.
  7. Top off with the sparkling cider or Ginger Ale.

Spicy Apple Cider-tini

Food and drink play an enormous role in the holiday season. As such, if you are wondering how you can make CBD a part of your holidays with some new recipe inspiration, look no further than this warm and spicy mocktini as your pre-dinner cocktail. Thanks to the inspiration from Rachelcooks.com for her Ginger Cinnamon Apple Cider Mocktail, now we have just the right drink for a fall party.

Ingredients for the Spicy Simple Syrup

Ingredients for the Cider-tini

  • 1 cup of apple cider
  • 2 tbsp. of the spicy simple syrup
  • Ice for the shaker
  • Cinnamon and sugar mixed for rimming the serving glass
  • Slice of apple and cinnamon stick for garnish

Modification Note: If you don’t have apple cider, you can match the heavier texture of the cider with a bit of applesauce with apple juice. And if you like extra spiciness, it’s better to grate a bit of ginger than adding a few thin slices. The richness of the vanilla flavored CBD oil will enhance the cinnamon taste, but if you prefer to add the natural flavored CBD oil instead, that works too.

Directions

  1. Add the sugar, cinnamon sticks, water, and ginger root to a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Heat until sugar is dissolved, then let cool completely before straining to remove cinnamon and ginger.
  3. Dip the rim of your glass into some apple cider before dipping it into the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  4. Add ice, apple cider, Vanilla flavored CBD oil, and the spicy syrup to a martini shaker and shake vigorously.
  5. Pour into your prepared glass and garnish with the slice of apple and a cinnamon stick.

Bonus Drink: Chocolate-Mint Dessert Latte

We obviously can’t end this post without some type of dessert cocktail for your holiday celebration! A final shout out to alattefood.com for this easy-peasy 5-minute homemade peppermint mocha inspiration for our very own CBD latte!

Ingredients for the coffee

Ingredients for the whipped cream and toppings

Modification Note: Depending on how you take your dessert coffee, you can use the French Vanilla flavor for a richer coffee flavor, or add the peppermint CBD oil drops for a refreshing dessert coffee.

Directions for the whipped cream

  1. Pour heavy whipping cream, CBD tincture, and sugar into a mixer
  2. Whip until a thick consistency

Directions for the dessert coffee

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it’s steaming but not boiling (approximately 1-2 minutes).
  2. Add the cocoa powder, sugar, and CBD oil to the milk and whisk until milk is foamy (about 30 seconds to a minute).
  3. Pour into a mug that already has your espresso or strong coffee in it.
  4. Add whipped cream and top off with the CBD chocolates.

Rustle up some calm this Thanksgiving with these super simple CBD holiday recipes.

If you’ve ever been responsible for laying on a spread at Thanksgiving, you don’t need us to tell you it’s quite the blood pressure raiser.

And when you’re working up a sweat over a hot stove, it can be hard to know if the steam is coming from the kitchen or your ears.

But it doesn’t have to be like that. Instead of whipping yourself into a frenzy, you could prepare a meal that promotes a sense of calm and helps to maintain balance. At least until someone suggests charades.

So, this holiday season, take a leaf out of our cookbook and add some stress-busting CBD into the mix with these Thanksgiving CBD recipes.

Sausage, Sage and CBD Stuffing Recipe

Let’s start with a Thanksgiving must-have: Stuffing. Our version of this holiday essential has been adapted from a stunning recipe by Elizabeth Stark over on SimplyRecipes.com.

We love the idea of switching out boring old white bread with sweet and crumbly cornbread, and by adding the natural-flavor CBD drops, your guests are sure to be stuffed and relaxed.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of cornbread, sliced, cubed (approx. 1cm x 1 cm) and toasted until golden
  • 4 – 6 sweet or spicy Italian sausages, casings removed and broken up into smaller chunks
  • 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of canola oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cups of diced celery
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh sage
  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups of chicken stock
  • 30 drops of Natural-flavor CBD Oil Drops

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F.
  2. Butter a small 8×8 baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter. Leave to one side.
  3. Add canola oil to a large, deep-sided skillet and brown the sausage over medium-high heat. Break the sausage meat into bite-sized pieces as it cooks, making sure it’s nicely browned on all sides. Pour off fat and transfer the sausage to a bowl.
  4. Turn the heat to low* and add 4 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Add the onion, celery, CBD Oil Drops and a pinch of salt. Cook until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for a further minute.
  5. Add the onion, celery and CBD mixture to the toasted cornbread. Fold in the browned sausage meat, chopped herbs, and stock. Taste and add salt if required. Finally, fold in the egg and mix until combined.
  6. Spoon the stuffing into the buttered baking dish and bake until piping hot (40 minutes). It should look golden brown on top, but if it starts to brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil. Serve hot!

*IMPORTANT: When cooking with CBD oil, it’s vital that you avoid exposing it directly to a high heat. This can compromise its potency and impact its overall effectiveness.

Rosemary Roasted Potatoes (Drizzled with CBD Oil)

Holiday cooking with CBD doesn’t have to be complicated, as this next recipe proves. Inspo comes from the aptly named Rosemary at An Italian In My Kitchen.

We couldn’t wait to add our own soothing spin to this mouthwatering dish. The perfect complement to Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing. Pass the potatoes!

Ingredients

  • 1.5kg (3lb) of large starchy potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters
  • 4 large sprigs of fresh rosemary, washed and removed from the stem
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 6 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
  • Half a tablespoon of sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons of oregano
  • 30 drops of Natural-flavor CBD Oil Drops

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Cook potatoes in boiling, salted water for 4-5 minutes. Drain thoroughly and rough up the outside of the potatoes by making criss-cross marks with the prongs of a fork (this will help make them nice and crispy on the outside).
  3. Place the potatoes into a mixing bowl and add the garlic and rosemary. Drizzle over the olive oil, add the CBD Drops and generously sprinkle with salt and oregano before tossing to ensure the potatoes are well coated.
  4. Dump the potatoes onto a large roasting tin and arrange into a compact single layer. Cook for around one hour and 20 minutes. Make sure to turn the potatoes regularly to ensure they crisp evenly. Serve immediately.

One-Bowl Pumpkin & Dark Chocolate CBD Cake Recipe

Would it even be Thanksgiving without a pumpkin-based dessert? No. No, it would not.

Well, thank your lucky stars we happened upon this deliciously moreish pumpkin and dark chocolate CBD cake, adapted from a recipe by Mel at Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. We’ve swapped the milk chocolate chips for chunks of dark CBD chocolate for a richer flavor and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. It’s definitely one of our favorite holiday desserts with CBD.

The best bit? The chocolate is gluten-free, vegan, and made from sustainably grown cacao harvested by local families in South America. Talk about a guilt-free CBD dessert recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of canned pumpkin puree
  • Half a cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 and a quarter cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • Half a cup of light brown sugar
  • Half a cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 and a half teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Half a cup of CBD organic dark chocolate, broken down into bite-sized chunks
  • Half a teaspoon of ground ginger
  • Half a teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • Half a teaspoon of baking soda
  • A quarter teaspoon of salt
  • One-eighth of a teaspoon of cloves

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325F.
  2. Lightly grease a 9×9-inch glass baking dish. Set to one side.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, applesauce, brown sugar, granulated sugar and eggs until well combined.
  4. Add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, salt and CBD chocolate.
  5. Stir mixture until there are no dry streaks. Take care not to overmix, as this may result in a dry and dense cake, instead of the light and moist dessert we’re aiming for.
  6. Spread mixture evenly in the baking dish. Bake for 40 – 45 minutes. Insert a cake tester stick into the center of the cake to ensure it’s baked all the way through.
  7. Allow the cake to cool before slicing. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Bonus Recipe: CBD-infused Pumpkin Spice Latte

Dairy-free and naturally sweetened, we’ve taken this fall favorite (inspired by Dana @ Minimalist Baker) to new levels of mood-boosting greatness. The spice mix hits all the right notes, while the subtle inclusion of the vanilla-flavored CBD drops brings about a whole load of calm with each sip.

Raise a toast to a stress-free Thanksgiving with this simple CBD pumpkin latte recipe:

Ingredients

  • Three-quarter cup of dairy-free milk (think: almond, cashew, coconut or even hemp milk)
  • A quarter cup of water
  • 2-3 tablespoons of pumpkin purée
  • Half a heaped teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice mix
  • One-eighth teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1- 2 teaspoons of maple syrup
  • 1 shot espresso
  • 30 drops of Vanilla-flavor CBD Oil Drops

Directions

  1. Add the dairy-free milk and water to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Add the pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice mix and maple syrup. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Pour in the espresso shot and add the CBD Oil Drops. Continue to stir until smooth.
  4. You can adjust the flavor by adding more spice mix, stronger coffee, or maple syrup.

There you have it! Four incredibly easy, tasty and calming Thanksgiving CBD recipes. And don’t forget to check out these CBD holiday drink recipes, too!

There are a whole host of CBD products on the market, and when it comes to offering a quick and easy way to ingest CBD, CBD tinctures are an excellent option.

Read on to learn about CBD tinctures and how you can make your own at home.

What are CBD tinctures?

A CBD tincture is a liquid extract of the cannabis plant, that is taken orally as an herbal preparation to relieve chronic pain, balance mood and assist with sleep (1). CBD tincture contains cannabidiol (CBD), along with a host of other active constituents of the cannabis plant, such as cannabinoids, alkaloids, glycosides, minerals, phytonutrients and terpenes.

CBD tinctures are most commonly made from the industrial hemp plant, a strain of cannabis that has been bred to contain less than 0.3% THC. However, CBD tinctures can also be made from low-THC strains of the marijuana plant.

For many who suffer from chronic pain, tinctures are a preferred method of CBD ingestion because of the ease of use, long shelf life and speed of delivery. CBD tinctures are administered sublingually, by taking a small dose of the extract under the tongue. The CBD is absorbed promptly by the mucous membrane in the mouth into the bloodstream, delivering relief within 15 minutes.

CBD tinctures are easy to make at home—you won’t need a chemistry degree to make your own. Read on to learn just how easy it is to make your own CBD tincture. But first, let’s take a look at some of the distinctions between store-bought and homemade CBD tinctures.

Homemade versus commercial

What is a commercial CBD tincture?

A commercial CBD tincture is an herbal cannabis preparation that is manufactured by a commercial producer for public sale. Commercial CBD tinctures commonly contain CBD oil extracted from the hemp or marijuana plant via commercial extraction methods and must comply with strict standards for quality, efficacy, purity, and labeling.

What is a homemade CBD tincture?

A homemade CBD tincture is a CBD-infused herbal preparation that you can make yourself at home by dissolving plant material—such as the flower, leaves and stem of the hemp plant—into a liquid solvent, such as high-proof alcohol, or a non-alcoholic carrier liquid, such as coconut oil, olive oil or vegetable glycerine.

What are the differences between commercial and homemade?

When it comes to choosing between homemade versus commercial CBD oil tinctures, it is essential to note which route works better for your lifestyle. Commercial products offer convenience and purity, while DIY tinctures provide full control over potency and ingredients.

Purity

The significant difference between homemade versus commercial is purity. A commercial CBD oil tincture is more thoroughly filtered than a homemade concoction. Commercial producers are required to meet strict standards for purity and utilize sophisticated filtration processes to thoroughly remove solvent and contaminants from the cannabis extract.

Ingredients

With a homemade CBD tincture, you have the freedom to select the type of cannabis you wish to extract your CBD from—if you’d prefer to avoid THC, you can use industrial hemp. If you’re in a legal state and aren’t averse to the effects of THC, then you can make your extract from a high-CBD strain of marijuana.

You also have the choice of liquids to extract your CBD into. If you wish to go the traditional route, then you can select a quality, high-proof alcohol. If you are sensitive to alcohol and would prefer a non-alcoholic tincture, then you can make your CBD tincture using vegetable oil or vegetable glycerine as the solvent.

Potency

While it’s easy and convenient to purchase a CBD tincture online or from a store, making your own CBD tincture at home allows you to have full control over the concentration of CBD. By tweaking the amount of plant matter, or experimenting with different strains of cannabis, you can create your own signature CBD tincture with a potency that’s perfect for you.

Methods of making CBD tinctures

Making your own CBD tinctures at home is pretty easy, but before you get started, you’ll need to decide on the method that’s right for you.

The first thing to consider when deciding on your preferred method is the solvent.

Solvents

Alcohol

Traditionally, herbal tinctures are made with alcohol. Using alcohol as the solvent produces a potent CBD extract that is very quickly absorbed by the body when taken sublingually (under the tongue).

While the amount of alcohol you will consume when taking an alcohol-based CBD tincture is minimal, it still needs to be metabolized by the body. If you have a sensitivity to alcohol, or you dislike the flavor or mouthfeel of alcohol, you should consider non-alcoholic methods for making CBD tincture.

Vegetable oil

If you’d prefer to use a non-alcoholic base for your tincture, or find high-grade alcohol hard to source, then vegetable oil method is a popular alternative. This method is simple and accessible, as it uses ingredients that you’re likely to already have in your pantry, such as coconut, olive or sunflower oil.

CBD tinctures made from vegetable oil are ideal to add to food and drink. If you’re interested in making your own CBD edibles, then the vegetable oil method may be the best match for you.

Glycerine

Vegetable glycerin is a clear liquid commonly derived from soy, palm and coconuts. Its lipid structure makes it an ideal solvent to replace alcohol because the cannabinoids attach to the lipids during extraction.

Keep in mind that CBD tinctures made with vegetable glycerin—also known as glycerites (2)— tend to be lower in potency than alcohol-based CBD tinctures, but they’re a great alternative for people who prefer to avoid alcohol.

Steeping

Steeping describes the process of dissolving the plant extract into the solvent. That may sound complicated, but steeping is a fairly simple and familiar process. If you’ve ever made a cup of tea, you’ll understand that the tea leaves need to steep in water for a period of time for the flavors and tannins of the tea to infuse into the water.

There are two methods of steeping. The first is the traditional method of maceration. The second is the more modern method of percolation.

The decision between maceration and percolation depends on one important factor: time.

Traditional maceration – the slow and simple method

Maceration is the most traditional method of making a tincture and is ideal for beginners. Simply add plant material and solvent to an airtight jar, and leave to steep in a cool, dark place.

You’ll require patience with this method, as it takes at least six weeks for the CBD and phytonutrients of the cannabis plant to dissolve into your chosen solvent.

Percolation – the quick but complex method

If you’d prefer to speed up the extraction process, you can use the percolation method. As with maceration, plant matter and solvent are added to an air-tight jar. But instead of leaving your jar on a shelf to steep for a lengthy period, the jar is instead placed into a water bath and brought to simmer.

While percolation is a bit more complex than maceration, and requires some extra utensils, this method is an ideal way to cut down the steeping time if you need your CBD tincture in a hurry.

Ingredients for making your own

Now that you’ve decided on your preferred solvent and extraction method, it’s time to select your ingredients.

What ingredients do you need to make one?

The first and most important ingredient that you’ll need to make a CBD tincture is cannabis.

Cannabis

CBD tincture can be made from the flower, leaf and stem of the cannabis plant. It is common to make them from “trim” or “shake,” which is the surplus cannabis left over after harvesting the flower. Trim can be used alone or combined with flower as an affordable option.

As noted earlier, CBD tincture can be made from either industrial hemp or high-CBD strains of marijuana, which are different types of Cannabis plants.

Industrial Hemp

We recommend using industrial hemp for your homemade CBD tincture. This is because industrial hemp contains a high concentration of CBD, and less than 0.3% THC, so it won’t get you high or have any unwanted psychoactive effects.

Marijuana

If you don’t mind the effects of THC, and you’re located in a state where cannabis is legal, you may choose to make your homemade CBD tincture from marijuana. We recommend a high-CBD, low-THC strain of marijuana, such as Ringo’s Gift, Harlequin, or ACDC. This will limit the effect of the THC, and maximize the effect of CBD, while taking advantage of the ‘entourage effect’, which describes the synergistic relationship between these two cannabinoids.

Solvents

The next ingredient you’ll need is your solvent. As we discussed earlier, the solvent is the liquid component of your tincture, and is what the CBD is extracted into.

You can choose between alcohol, vegetable oil, or glycerin as your solvent.

Alcohol

For alcohol-based tinctures, you’ll need a high-proof alcohol that is 60-70% ethyl alcohol or ethanol. Everclear is a recommended source because of its high alcohol content, as is 151 Rum. You want to make sure that you are using food-safe alcohol that is not denatured.

Vegetable Oil

Vegetable oil is probably the easiest solvent to source, as well as the most cost-effective. A wide range of vegetable oils can be purchased from the grocery store—in fact, you may already have the perfect vegetable oil in your pantry, ready to be made into a CBD tincture.

Not all vegetable oils are made equal when it comes to tinctures. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Liquid Coconut Oil: Cannabinoids rely on fatty acids as a binding agent, and since coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, it’s an ideal oil for your homemade CBD tincture. For tinctures, it is necessary to purchase liquid coconut oil, as coconut oil becomes solid at room temperature.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil is regarded worldwide as a healthy oil, rich in antioxidants and oleic acid. An added benefit of olive oil is that it is efficient in preserving terpenes from the cannabis plant, providing a whole-plant extract.
  • Sunflower Oil: Sunflower oil is an affordable option, with a milder flavor than coconut and olive oil. Sunflower Oil is well suited to percolation, as it has good thermal stability. Additionally, sunflower oil is high in lecithin, which helps to increase the shelf life of your tincture.
Glycerin

It’s important to note that not all glycerin is appropriate for human consumption. For a glycerin-based CBD tincture, be sure to purchase food-grade vegetable glycerin from a trusted, sustainable source.

Tools and supplies for making CBD tinctures?

What makes it so easy to make CBD tinctures at home is the fact that the tools and supplies required are regular household items.

Here’s what you’ll need to make a tincture via the traditional maceration method:

  • Mason jar
  • Cheesecloth or coffee filters
  • Glass bottle (amber or cobalt glass works best)
  • Baking tray
  • Parchment paper
  • Timer

If you’re making your tincture using the percolator method, you’ll also need:

  • Glass or metal bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Candy thermometer

How to decarboxylate your cannabis

Before you start infusing, you’ll need to decarb your cannabis. Don’t worry—this is a simple step that you can do in your kitchen.

Decarboxylation is the process of heating your cannabis at a specific temperature to activate the cannabinoids. In the case of CBD, decarboxylation (decarbing for short) transforms the inactive CBD-A cannabinoid of raw cannabis into active CBD.

  1. Preheat your oven to 240°F.
  2. With your fingers, break your cannabis into small chunks.
  3. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  4. Distribute the cannabis evenly onto the paper and place the tray into the oven.
  5. Allow the cannabis to toast for 20 minutes. Gently move the cannabis around with a wooden spoon so that it heats evenly. Put back into the oven.
  6. When the cannabis starts to look lightly toasted, it’s time to take it out of the oven. Hemp and high-CBD strains of marijuana generally take 60-90 minutes to decarb.
  7. Remove from oven and leave to cool.

Our favorite homemade CBD tincture recipes

Now that you’ve chosen your method and have your tools and ingredients assembled, you’re ready to make your own homemade CBD tincture!

Here are three simple recipes to get you started.

Traditional Alcohol CBD Tincture

  1. Fill half of the jar with decarbed cannabis.
  2. Fill the remaining half of the jar with high-proof alcohol.
  3. Close jar tightly and label the jar with the date.
  4. Leave the jar to steep in a cool, dark place.
  5. Let tincture steep. Agitate daily by shaking the jar gently.
  6. After six weeks, strain through cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a large bowl.
  7. Funnel the filtered liquid into a glass bottle.
  8. Label and store in a cool, dry place.

Alcohol CBD Tincture – percolator method

  1. Half fill the jar with decarbed cannabis.
  2. Fill the remaining half of the jar with high-proof alcohol. Close jar tightly.
  3. Place the sealed jar in a water bath. Simmer for 20 minutes at 170° F.
  4. Remove the jar from the water bath and leave to cool.
  5. Once cool, strain through cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a large bowl.
  6. Funnel the filtered liquid into a glass bottle.
  7. Label and store in a cool, dry place.

Note: Safety is advised when heating alcohol. As alcohol is highly flammable, it can be dangerous to use near an open flame. Always use caution when heating alcohol.

Non-alcoholic CBD tincture

  1. Half fill the jar with decarbed cannabis.
  2. Fill the remaining half of the jar with coconut oil or glycerine.

Tinctures have a long shelf life and can last for years when stored in a cool, dark location.

Serving sizes for CBD tinctures vary based on the individual. As with all CBD, we advise to start low and go slow. Start with 1ml of tincture, and increase as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to make your own?

Historically, CBD tinctures have been made using the traditional maceration method with an alcohol solvent. However, the ease of using tools and ingredients that you already have in your kitchen, and the time saved in waiting for the tincture to infuse, makes the percolation method using common vegetable oils an increasingly popular method.

What’s the easiest way to make your own?

Traditional maceration using a common vegetable oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, is the easiest method of making CBD tinctures.

What’s the most reliable method?

While all of the methods detailed above are reliable as long as the instructions are followed correctly, the most reliable method is, of course, to buy a commercially-made CBD tincture.

You cook up a delicious dinner, a perfect combination of flavor and presentation, but did you know you can transform your regular dinner party into something truly unique with a single ingredient? That ingredient is CBD. CBD food pairings not only enhances the taste but also leaves you with the soothing, calming effects of the cannabinoid. Matching flavors could be the key to throwing an unforgettable CBD dinner party. Learn more about our favorite CBD food pairings for each course below.

Starter – Fresh Salad and Greens

Our recommended pairing: Tasty Hemp Oil’s Tasty CBD Drops in natural

When you’re enjoying a fresh spring salad or another veggie-based starter, you want those natural, crisp flavors from every vegetable matched with some simple dressing and seasonings. Adding too much or going too strong with overbearing flavors can easily offset and overpower the vegetables, resulting in unbalanced aromas and unhappy taste buds.

Natural hemp oil offers a subtle, earthy flavor that can match well with brighter greens and vegetables. Tasty CBD Drops offer a natural flavor, along with berry, vanilla, and spearmint. Using the convenient dropper system, you can take your necessary hemp oil prior to your meal or place some drops in your salad dressing or directly on your greens.

Entree – Seafood/Fish

Our recommended pairing: Elixinol’s Pure CBD Tincture

Good seafood offers a unique combination of light, delicate, and fatty flavors all at once. Adding some bright citrus can provide more balance and depth by canceling out any excessive, overpowering fishy aromas while accentuating the subtler flavors.

For vegan and vegetarian guests, citrus flavors pair well with just about any dish with rich flavors, like thick, creamy pasta.

We recommend Elixinol’s Pure CBD Tincture, which offers a uniquely refreshing citrus flavor that comes from a blend of natural fruit and herbal extracts, naturally sweetened with Stevia. A serving of about 5 drops of this tincture offers 5 mg of CBD.

Dessert – Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream

Our recommended pairing: Raw Relief Honey Chill Sticks from Colorado Hemp Honey

End your dinner party with a delicious sweet treat like a peach cobbler a la mode topped with raw honey from Colorado Hemp Honey. The tartness of the peaches and smooth ice cream should pair great with the rich sweetness and natural hemp flavors from the honey for a rustic dessert that doesn’t sacrifice elegance or taste. Each honey stick is made with a full-spectrum CBD hemp oil and raw Rocky Mountain honey.

Post-Dinner Drinks – Red Wine

Our recommended pairing: Tasty Cocoas CBD Chocolates from Tasty Hemp Oil

End your dinner party on a positive note by pairing your favorite bottle of red wine with Tasty Cocoas CBD Chocolates from Tasty Hemp Oil. Wine often provides a variety of complex flavors that combine tart, sweet fruits with uniquely bitter tannins. Chocolate can help to mellow out some of the more bitter flavors while enhancing the sweeter, fruitier flavors throughout. At the same time, the wine can make that chocolate taste sweeter and smoother on the palate. It ultimately carries over some of the sweetness from your dessert course without cloying your guests’ taste buds.

There currently isn’t much research on mixing alcohol and CBD, though most experts agree that the combination shouldn’t result in any adverse effects. CBD may actually help to offset some of the effects of alcohol. For example, some animal studies show that CBD may protect against the neurodegeneration that comes with alcohol use, while another study suggests that CBD’s effects may protect the liver from damage caused by alcohol. As always, moderation is key. Drink responsibly.

General Tips for Pairing CBD and Food

Pairing foods and flavors is not an exact science, but some general tips to keep in mind:

  • Balance is the key to the perfect pairing, and that comes with considering the strength of flavors in the food. A rich, creamy pasta or grilled steak naturally offers flavors that are heavier on the palate. You want lighter flavors, like citrus, lemon, or mint, that can help to lift that weight and provide greater overall balance.
  • Consider your intent. Do you want to relax after a long day, or are you simply looking to relieve aches and pains? Pairing CBD with food is about creating a complete experience that satisfies your tongue and tummy and providing the natural healing properties of CBD.
  • If you’re not sure where to start, match similar flavors. For example, if you are enjoying a roast chicken with cherry sauce, consider a berry-flavored CBD oil.

Most importantly, there aren’t any hard and fast rules for CBD and food pairings. Try experimenting with different flavors and dishes. You may make some surprising culinary discoveries.

With rent, bills, groceries, and all the other finances in your life, you need to save where you can, even when it comes to CBD products. While you should absolutely spend a little more when it means getting quality ingredients, you can still learn to buy smart and save money along the way. Here are some of the best ways to save big when buying CBD products.

1. Mind the CBD concentration.

The best place to start is to purchase your CBD based on its concentration. The price of a CBD product is generally determined by the amount of CBD it contains, often referred to as strength, concentration, or potency. High-strength CBD products generally cost more than low-strength CBD products but provide a higher concentration of CBD per serving. This means that high concentration CBD products provide better value for experienced CBD users with a higher tolerance, users who need help with severe pain, or others who need a stronger potency. For users who are just starting out or those who prefer taking smaller amounts of CBD, low-strength products will provide them with better value.

2. Know the delivery method.

In addition to CBD strength, you should also consider the product type and delivery method, which describes how CBD is absorbed into the body. By researching the different product types and delivery methods before you buy, you can better understand their benefits, including the duration of effects and how long it takes for the effects kick in.

Tinctures

  • A liquid CBD supplement placed under the tongue
  • Enters the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue) via the mucous membrane of the mouth
  • Moderately fast acting
  • Long-lasting effect

Edibles

  • Food that is infused with CBD, consumed and absorbed into the body via the digestive system
  • Takes longer for the effects to kick in than vaping and sublingual methods
  • Long-lasting effect

Concentrates

  • A concentrated form of CBD
  • Small, high-strength servings consumed via the mouth, absorbed both sublingually and via the digestive system
  • Moderately fast acting
  • Long-lasting effect

Capsules

  • A CBD supplement in capsule form swallowed and absorbed into the body via the digestive system
  • Takes longer for the effects to kick in than vaping and sublingual methods
  • Long-lasting effect

Topicals

  • CBD extract added to a carrier oil or skin care product
  • Designed to be applied topically to the skin or massaged into problem areas
  • Absorbed via the skin
  • Moderately fast acting
  • Long-lasting effect

Suppositories

  • CBD extract in a carrier oil that is inserted into the vagina or rectum and absorbed into the bloodstream via the mucous membrane
  • Moderately fast acting
  • Long lasting effect

By doing the research on delivery methods before you buy, you have a better chance of selecting the product that is right for you, saving you time and money in the long run.

3. Buy in bulk.

If you’re a regular CBD user and have trusted products you often purchase, it’s almost always worth it to buy in bulk. While stocking up with larger sizes requires a higher price upfront, over time you could be saving 20 to 40 percent. Aside from the price of materials, shipping and packing costs are usually the same whether you are purchasing $5 worth of CBD products or $50. You ultimately save money and ensure a steady supply of your favorite CBD oil or capsules in your pantry.

4. Read customer reviews.

Reviews are an invaluable resource for CBD customers seeking good value. Customer reviews help you assess the quality and efficacy of a product and provide a snapshot of how a product has benefited other customers just like you. Reviews also help you understand what you can expect from the order process and the quality of a company’s customer service. By spending some time reading through customer reviews, you get a good idea of whether a product provides good value or if your money is better spent elsewhere. Healthy Hemp Oil features over 9,000 customer reviews on our products. Visit our review page to learn more.

5. Always buy from a reputable brand.

The best companies test their products through a third-party lab and make those results readily available. There are literally thousands of brands selling CBD in various forms. Most are real companies trying to build a solid reputation, while others are less so. As enticing as low prices seem, do your due diligence. Look for quality, natural ingredients. Third-party lab testing ensures that you’re getting a safe product and gives you added peace of mind. It’s worth it to pay a little extra if it means getting a product that you know will work as intended.

6. Look for veterans assistance programs.

Some CBD companies will provide assistance programs for military veterans. These assistance programs provide discounts on products, ensuring that you can support your health and wellbeing without needing to worry about your finances. Veterans can learn more about Healthy Hemp Oil’s military discount program here.

7. Take advantage of coupon codes when available.

Most CBD companies will provide coupons and promo codes that can help you save at checkout. The savings from these coupon codes can add up, even if it is just free shipping. Keep an eye on social media accounts.

Better yet, many companies also offer free newsletters that keep you up to date on new products, articles, and deals. Newsletter subscribers usually get exclusive access to sales, giveaways and other special offers. If you find a brand or company that you love, subscribe to their newsletter.

Healthy Hemp Oil features a wide range of lab-tested CBD products, made from the highest quality industrial hemp. Subscribe to our email newsletter to stay up to date with CBD research and trends, and receive exclusive access to special offers.

Whether you love the taste of espresso or hate early mornings, nothing beats a cup of coffee in the morning. Providing the characteristic pep and warmth, the classic cup of joe has gone through numerous iterations over the years, from lattes and cappuccinos to flat whites and cold brew. Coffee keeps you awake and focused, providing you with the energy to get through your day. Recently, coffee has been married with a new and growing trend: CBD. Read on to learn more about how adding CBD to your coffee can add a jitter-free boost of energy to your day.

Understanding CBD and Coffee

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant that has been studied for its wide range of potential benefits to general health and wellbeing. Part of this comes from how CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid receptors. Where THC binds directly to these receptors, CBD works indirectly to change signaling pathways, which influences the ebb and flow of various neurotransmitters. This may result in a variety of effects, most commonly:

  • Reduced discomfort
  • Improved sleep
  • Support for a healthy mood
  • Reduced stress
  • Increased sense of calm and relaxation

Coffee contains a variety of different components, such as diterpenes and antioxidants, but most people drink coffee for the caffeine, an active stimulant that provides the characteristic boost in energy and alertness.

Putting Together CBD and Coffee

CBD and coffee can seem at odds considering their respective effects. One has a reputation for calm and relaxation, while the other is known for wakefulness and energy. Surprisingly, some studies suggest that coffee and cannabis may activate some similar pathways in the brain.

While you might think that one cancels out the other, putting the two together may actually accentuate and complement individual effects. Anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD in coffee offers the same focused energy and alertness of coffee without the jitters.

A common (though as yet untested) theory suggests that CBD and caffeine inhibit a chemical known as adenosine. Adenosine plays a variety of roles, particularly involving energy transfer and cell signaling, but it’s also known to act as a central nervous system sedative. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, which results in you feeling more awake and alert. CBD is believed to delay the reuptake of adenosine into your neurons, which may contribute to its potential to calm the body and help in the management of inflammation.

The Potential Benefits of CBD Coffee

The fact is, science still doesn’t have a great understanding of how neurotransmitters work, and we still need more research to determine how CBD and caffeine (as well as the other compounds in caffeine) might interact with one another. However, using CBD coffee may still come with a variety of potential benefits, though results may vary.

Improved Mood

Both CBD and coffee are rumored to have mood-lifting properties on their own. Working together, CBD and coffee may help to regulate your mood to reduce stress and support relaxation without making you sluggish or lethargic.

Antioxidant Potential

Both CBD and coffee are known to be rich sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants combat the effects of free radicals, compounds that can cause damage to cells and DNA, resulting in inflammation and common signs of aging. The antioxidant potential of both CBD and coffee may help to curb and prevent some of this damage, though more studies are still needed to support this.

How to Drink CBD Coffee

Consider different delivery methods

CBD is available in a variety of forms, including CBD tinctures and oils. While you can drop some CBD oil into your coffee or mix CBD-infused butter into your next brew, some companies have developed CBD-infused coffee beans, allowing you to get the most of the cannabinoid right out of the brewing process.

Serving size matters

While the exact effects of CBD coffee still require further study, most experts do agree that the serving size of both the coffee and the amount of CBD matter. The potential effects of CBD are dependent on serving size, meaning that you won’t feel the effects if your dose is too low or too high. If this is your first time with CBD or CBD coffee, start under 10 mg of CBD per cup of coffee.

Even within those parameters, you may experience different effects based on your serving size. Lower CBD concentrations of 2 to 10 mg may improve focus and have more mood-lifting effects. Around 10 mg of CBD is when you should expect more calming, relaxing effects. This can vary from person to person and may take some trial and error. As always, start low and gradually increase CBD concentrations to see how you feel.

Don’t go overboard

Even if the CBD makes you feel fine, try not to go overboard on the coffee. Too much caffeine in your system is not a good thing. Try to keep your intake to under five cups of coffee per day. Any more than that and you’ll still probably feel the jitters even with the CBD.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about CBD coffee, but experts agree that combining CBD and coffee is perfectly safe and likely won’t compromise your health. If you think CBD coffee could give a boost to your day, take a look at our selection of CBD tinctures to add to your next cup of joe.

At Healthy Hemp Oil, we are passionate advocates of cannabis awareness and encourage everyone to participate in learning about cannabis, not just in its use but also raising awareness about cannabis, its potential effects, and how it can fit into our larger lives and local communities. There are many ways you can get active in your support and advocacy of cannabis. Here are some of our favorites.

1. Experiment with a CBD recipe

The current CBD landscape offers numerous forms of administering and using CBD. Cooking with CBD is one of the most fun, allowing you to combine your culinary skills with the potential health effects of cannabidiol. While there are plenty of recipes out there, incorporating CBD into your food doesn’t have to be difficult.

  • Add a few drops of CBD oil to sauces or dressings
  • Top your popcorn with CBD oil
  • Combine your favorite smoothie ingredients with some CBD oil to get your morning started

2. Learn about the history of cannabis use and legislation

Even beyond the plant, it’s important to understand the history of cannabis leading up to today. While the cannabis plant has humble beginnings, its place in the modern world intersects with race, class, and social and cultural issues that are still prominent today. Learning about the history of cannabis can help you better understand prohibition, and the current movement to legalize cannabis across the nation (and the world).

There are some gradual steps being made. Currently, 34 states and the District of Columbia have publicly available programs for medical marijuana. Twelve other states allow for the use of “low THC, high CBD” products. Only four states (Idaho, Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota) do not have any public access to marijuana of any kind.

The Farm Bill of 2018 recently passed, which legalized hemp and hemp-derived products. The passage of this Bill spells big steps in the right direction for CBD products and businesses.

3. Learn about 420

For most anyone who enjoys cannabis, April 20th is the special time of year to enjoy marijuana to its fullest, but not many people know of its roots, which go back to 1971 at San Rafael High School. A group of five students, nicknamed The Waldos, heard rumors of a cannabis patch grown and abandoned by a U.S. Coast Guardsman somewhere in the forests of Point Reyes Peninsula.

Armed with a map, the Waldos met every day at 4:20pm at their school’s Louis Pasteur statue. They would plan, scour the map, and smoke copious amounts of weed before venturing into the forest. They never found the secret patch of cannabis, but “4:20” stuck as the Waldos’ code for getting high.

Today, 420 has grown to encompass so much more, including:

  • Huge 420 festivals and shopping events in legal states
  • Community gatherings and park meets in non-legal places where people gather to build community and protest prohibition
  • Campaigns to raise awareness for legal reform and those still incarcerated for cannabis-related crimes

4. Support cannabis advocacy groups

There are numerous state and local cannabis advocacy groups fighting all things related to cannabis use, from the decriminalization of cannabis to easier access to medical marijuana. Some stand out groups include:

  • NORML – The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws was founded in 1970 and has since provided a voice to those who oppose marijuana prohibition and support decriminalization. The nonprofit works by supporting voter initiatives and elected officials that advocate for marijuana law reform.
  • ASAAmericans for Safe Access are dedicated to ensuring safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research, which includes passing legislation that recognizes cannabis as a legal medicine, encouraging medical professionals to recommend options of medical cannabis as frontline treatment options, providing necessary information to patients and caregivers, and more. Founded in 2002, the organization has grown to encompass over 100,000 active members comprising scientists, medical professionals, patients, and everyday concerned citizens from all 50 states.
  • NCIA – The National Cannabis Industry Association comprises tens of thousands of cannabis professionals and businesses committed to advancing federal cannabis reform, defending existing state laws, and protecting the rights of businesses and customers alike.

These are just three cannabis advocacy groups to get started. Do your research and find a local chapter that you can support and get involved with. Supporting organizations usually involves monetary donations, but your time and attention are just as important. Consider attending an event hosted by these organizations or volunteering your time where you can.

5. Contact lawmakers

The 2018 Farm Bill (more officially known as the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018) federally legalized the production of hemp. This is a big step for cannabis, particularly in the realm of CBD, but there’s still a long way to go.

Contact lawmakers and legislators at all levels to push for meaningful reform and change. This includes your state representatives, senators, and governor. These are your public officials, which means they should represent your interests, but they won’t know unless you tell them directly.

There are numerous ways to reach your officials. You can write a letter, postcard, or email. ResistBot makes it easy to contact your officials via text, but phone calls are the most direct and effective means of contacting them. Some general tips for calling your legislators:

  • Give your name and address.
  • Prepare with a script or outline for all the points that you want to talk about.
  • Be brief, concise, and to the point, but also be personal. Let them know why you personally want to push for cannabis reform.
  • Don’t argue or get discouraged.
  • Ask for action or a commitment to vote.

Only contact representatives in your district or jurisdiction. It’s no use to call a rep for a different state. More likely, you’re just making the line busy for other concerned citizens.

If you live in a state where your reps already support cannabis decriminalization, consider contacting your officials to thank them and tell them to keep up their views. These lawmakers can get a lot of negativity from voters, and a “thank you” can go a long way.

6. Share CBD with your loved ones.

If you have a friend or loved ones who also like CBD or have been curious to try, now is the perfect time to get them in on the action. There is a wide range of CBD products on the market, especially for those new to the cannabinoid. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at our gift guide or take our quiz to find the perfect CBD oil product for your friend.
